Savage to Discontinue Dog-Waste Bags, will Save $13,000 08 Aug 11

It’s a classic example of small-town government decisions: After 10 years of providing dog-waste bags at 40 stations throughout the city of Savage, city staff has opted not to refill the stations when the bags run out.

Parks Superintendent Jon Allen estimates that approximately 80,000 bags were used in 2010; with about 27,000 residents, it averages out to three bags per person, but there are only 400 licensed dogs in the city.

The city estimates that it could save $13,000 per year by not restocking the bags.
