Burnsville man pleads guilty in friend’s shooting death 08 Sep 11

A Burnsville man admitted in court yesterday to fatally shooting a guest during a football party last year.

47-year-old Robert Thomas pleaded guilty in Dakota County District Court to second-degree manslaughter in the January 23 death of 38-year-old James Keonig, also of Burnsville.

The shooting happened at Thomas’ home during a gathering to watch the Bears-Packers game. Thomas said he was angry that the Koenig had posed for shirtless photos in his 13-year-old son’s bedroom. According to a witness, Koenig rushed toward Thomas, saying Thomas lacked the guts to “do anything about it.” Thomas responded with a shotgun blast to Koenig’s chest.

Thomas’s sentencing has been set for October 27 and the judge ordered a pre-sentence investigation.
