The long-time pastor of New Prague’s Holy Trinity Lutheran Church announced this weekend his decision to resign.
Pastor Steve Trewartha told his congregation Sunday that he is leaving after 20 years of leadership at the church.
Trewartha’s resignation comes amidst a disagreement with and pressure from the church’s governing body, the Evangelical Lutheran Churches of America. Holy Trinity’s members considered pursuing a second denominational membership in light of a 2009 ELCA decision regarding gay clergy, but a congregational vote on the issue last month failed.
Trewartha admits the decision was complicated and difficult, but says he is grateful to the New Prague community for his tenure.
Trewartha’s final day as Senior Pastor at Holy Trinity will be October 8.
