Week in Review

Week of: 9/11-9/17
Matches/Results: Def. Wayzata 25-18, 25-10, 25-15
Def. Chaska 27-25, 25-19, 25-20

Brief Commentary per Match:
The Sabers were determined to be mentally and physically prepared for each match after the frustrating defeat from Chanhassen last Thursday. Our match-up against #3 ranked Wayzata proved that to be useful as we jumped out to an early lead of 11-4 and 17-6 in set one. Using a combined team hitting percentage of .435, 10 blocks and 6 ace serves, we were able to hold the Trojans from any significant runs.

In just the second conference battle of the year, we did JUST enough each set to get a 3-0 victory. In both set one and two we started with 7-2 scores prompting Chaska to take time-outs. Both times Chaska rallied back and took the lead. Chaska out defended us in both sets, and got timely kills from two freshmen. Down 22-24 in the first set, we rallied back to take the first set 27-25. Unfortunately, we didn’t learn from that experience as we again needed to battle back late in the set to get a 25-19 win. Although the third set score was close, we did feel a bit more in control.

Individual Player Highlights:
Against Wayzata, four hitters hit at or above .500 (Monnens .500 with 11 kills, Sames .500 with 17 kills, Hoppe .500 with 16 kills, and Pieper .667 with 2 kills). We had a team passer rating of 2.24 (our best of the season). This gave our setter plenty of options and kept the Wayzata blockers from cheating.

Against Chaska, Freshman hitter, Kenzie Pieper had a breakout night with 7 kills on 12 attempts and just one error (.500 attack percentage). She played all three front row positions demonstrating her versatility. Rachel Rhinesmith had a perfect hitting night on the right side where she had 6 kills in 6 attempts. She also added 2 of the team’s 11 blocks.
