Third grade students in Jordan will be getting a little more help in the classroom thanks to a school board decision this week.
The board voted Monday to hire a half-time third grade teacher. Elementary School Principal Stacy DeCorsey proposed the idea, saying the staff would “like to have somebody in the morning right now to help with these groups. They’re just really big.” DeCorsey said the teacher would take a group of students to teach specific curricular areas.
Several teachers came to the meeting to support the proposal. Third grade teacher Greg Dietel said he has 32 students in one class, and a half-time teacher would reduce that number to 28.
Board Member Joe Benko was the lone note vote, supporting instead an additional full-time teacher. However, staff said there were logistical difficulties with hiring a full-time position right now.
