RED WING – It what was the toughest loss of the season for the New Prague Trojans as they would have the lead twice in a game, but lose on the road to Red Wing 31-22 Friday night in Missota Conference action. In a game that saw four lead changes including three in the second half it was the passing game for Red Wing that took over in the second half that led the Wingers to victory.
Scoring would hold off until the second quarter, but the big moment of the first quarter would happen on the second play of the game as New Prague running back would get ejected from the game for punching a Red Wing player and would force New Prague to bring in sophomore Nathan Preston who would rush for 118 yards on the evening for the Trojans.
The first score would come with 10:55 left in the second quarter when Red Wing quarterback Joel Newman would connect with receiver Dayton Johnson from 11-yards to give the Wingers an early 6-0 lead after the extra point was blocked by New Prague’s Zack Shetka. The Trojans would answer back with a scoring drive of their own going 58-yards highlighted by a 28-yard run by Nathan Preston before Zack Shetka would score from 7-yards on a pitch play to the right. New Prague would miss the extra point and keep the score tied 6-6 with 7:43 in the second quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff Red Wing’s Alex Harder would fumble the ball and New Prague would recover and get the ball at the Winger 25-yard-line. Six plays later New Prague would punch it in with an option pitch to Nick Johnson from 15-yards to put New Prague ahead. The Trojans would convert a two-point-conversion run by quarterback Kyle Stepka to give New Prague a 14-6 lead. Red Wing would start their next drive at their own 25-yard-line and appear to go three-and-out and punted the ball, but New Prague was hit with a 15-yard-penalty when a player hit the long snapper before he was able to defend himself and kept the drive going for Red Wing. They would score on a spectacular one-handed catch from Jack Strusz from 19-yards out to give us a 14-12 halftime score with New Prague ahead.
Red Wing would get the ball to start the second half and decided to go through the air against the New Prague defense and took 15-plays to get 78-yards down the field ending with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Joel Newman to Matt Petterson and would fail on their two-point-conversion pass to make the score 18-14, Red Wing. New Prague would start with great field position at their 48-yard-line and would take eight plays to get into the end zone to take the lead back with Zack Shetka’s second touchdown of the evening this time from 3-yards out. Luke Tietz would convert on the two-point conversion with an end around run play to take a 22-18 lead for New Prauge.
Scoring would hold off until there was 6:02 left in the fourth quarter when Red Wing would go 65-yards ending with a 2-yard touchdown run from quarterback Joel Newman to give the Wingers the lead again. The extra point would be good by Marcus Noesen to make the score 25-22, Red Wing. New Prague on their next drive would get a first down, but not convert on a 4th-and-6 from their own 38-yard-line. Two plays later Red Wing would add a final score to cement the win when Joel Newman hit Dayton Johnson with his second touchdown reception of the game to give the final score of 31-22, Red Wing.
Red Wing quarterback Joel Newman was great passing the ball with 25-mile-per-hour winds throughout the evening. Newman was 19-of-31 passing for 256 yards and four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in the win for the Wingers. Dayton Johnson had six receptions for 91 yards and two touchdowns for Red Wing and Matt Petterson had seven receptions for 80 yards.
Red Wing improves to 4-1 in the Missota and 5-1 overall. New Prague falls to 1-4 in the Missota Conference and 1-5 overall. New Prague will host Chanhassen Friday night at 7pm in a game that can be heard on 1350 AM KCHK.
