Brief Commentary per Match:
In easily the most exciting home match of the year, we took advantage of a full house and loud student section in defeating #5 ranked and the only other state champion other than us in the last 4 years. We knew heading into the year that blocking and defense would need to be our biggest focuses as areas of improvement. In this match, the hard work was evident as we had a season (and likely history-making) high for team blocks with 27 against potent offensive team, especially against one of the best hitters in the state in Alyssa Goehner. Add 62 team digs and 7 serve aces and it was an amazing team effort.

The Eastview Invitational proved to be one of the best in the state with several teams that could have taken home the championship. Our hopes to get a chance to play #1 ranked and undefeated Blaine were spoiled thanks to the surprise team of the tournament, Andover. After beating us in two hard-fought matches, they went on to upset Blaine AND Eden Prairie. This helped us feel a little better about our loss, which seemed to come from a combination of Andover’s impressive all-around play and our lack of energy left-over from Thursday night’s big win. We weren’t exactly efficient on the weekend as we blew opportunities to blow-out Totino-Grace and Eastview when given the chances. Our fifth place match against Hopkins was hard-fought, and ended in a stressful finish with a 17-15 final game.

Individual Player Highlights:
Red Wing Match: Taylor Koehn had a breakout night offensively with 7 kills in just 11 attempts for a .545 hitting %. She also added 3 blocks on the night. Kari Monnens had one of her best all-around nights with 9 kills on 17 attempts and a .412 hitting %. She also had 3 ace serves and 2 blocks on the night. Berger led all digs with 12 and had 3 ace serves. She also had her best passing night of the year.

Lakeville North Match: Rhinesmith (.833%) and Lemke (.750%) had extremely efficient offensive nights with 5 and 3 kills respectively. Hoppe led the team offensively with 13 kills and a .345%. Sames and Rhinesmith combined for one of the best blocking pairs in Shakopee history with 9 and 7 blocks respectively, and Berger’s 19 digs included some of the hardest hit balls from opponents this year.

After one warm-up match against Lakeville, Bleess and Rhinesmith continued to make a nice team as a new play was unveiled that surprised opponents. Bleess stepped out of the backrow to set and Rhinesmith was the successful receiver taking the opponents off guard as they expected Rhinesmith to be setting the other two hitters in the front row. Having three varsity caliber setters on one team has been both a challenge and a blessing. We are figuring our ways to utilize all of their skills as setters, blockers, hitters, defenders and servers.
