A former Blue Earth County commissioner was killed Monday while he was apparently using a tractor to stop a grass fire.
The Mankato Free Press reports investigators say 77-year-old Alvis More was found in a burned tractor in his farm south of Pemberton, but they are waiting for official identification from the Ramsey County coroner’s office.
More had been burning garbage in a portion of a corn or soybean field that had been tilled when the wind spread the fire into a nearby grassy area.
Investigators suspect More was attempting to stop the fire by using a tractor to dig a small ditch to cut it off. He either had a medical problem or was overcome by smoke and wasn’t able to get out of the tractor when it caught fire.
