Only two girls on the team (Emilee Gutzmer and Kelsey Chambers) were on the team when Jordan was last at state in 2008 and many of the other girls were sitting in the stands watching that team win state. So there were many hugs and happy tears from the Jordan side after qualifying for state.
“I’ve only cried happy tears twice in my life, once after we beat Belle Plaine on Thursday and tonight.” Jordan junior middle hitter Courtney Smith. Those words were shared a lot by the Jordan Jaguars team after the game ended.
The evening started with side out volleyball all the way to 5-5 at the beginning and then junior Becca Pauly would serve Jordan on a 5-0 run with help from the attack of Paige Smith and Kelsey Chambers to take a 10-5 lead. Another 3-0 run for Jordan would start after another service error by LSH and the Jags would take a 15-10 lead. Once again though LSH would battle back with kills from Jessica Thelemann and Gabby Thomas to make the score 18-17, Jordan. The Jaguars would respond and keep LSH three points away the rest of the set. The set ended on a service error by Jessica Thelemann to give Jordan the set 25-22. LeSueur-Henderson had six service errors to Jordan’s one in the first set.
Jordan would start the second set where they left off with the first set and would take an early lead and got out to a 10-6 lead before the Giants would go on a 4-1 run on the kills of Rebecca Mayer and Gretta Schultz to make the score 10-9, Jordan. Jordan would use their big rotation on the front row of Chambers and Paige Smith to go on an 8-1 run to turn the second set into a blowout at 19-11, Jordan. The Jaguars would take a big two sets to none lead by winning the set 25-17.
The third set saw LeSueur-Henderson take their first lead of the night at 8-7 as part of a 3-0 run with a kill from Amber Zeiher. Jordan on the serve of Paige Smith would go on a 8-0 run to put Jordan up 15-10 and take a commanding lead in the third set. LeSueur-Henderson would only get the score to within three and not any closer thanks to the constant barrage of Jordan attacks and attacking errors from Giant hitters. The final point would be a service error by LSH into the net that clinched the section title for Jordan. Then the celebration started for Jordan.
Kelsey Chambers would lead the Jordan attack with 21 kills and Paige Smith had 9 kills as Jordan advances to state for the fourth time in school history.
LeSueur-Henderson finishes the season at 22-9. Jordan improves to 19-10 on the year and will play Thursday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul in the Class AA Quarterfinal. You can hear all Jordan state tournament matches on 1350 AM KCHK and online at kchkradio.net.
