A Chaska resident and area fire chief has been named Fire Officer of the Year by the Minnesota State Fire Chief Association.

Scott Gerber received the award last month at the group’s annual conference in St. Cloud. He has served as Excelsior’s fire chief since 2006 and is also a member of the Chaska Fire Department and the former Risk/Emergency Management Director for Carver County.

Gerber was nominated for the award for a number of initiatives he has been involved with, including the statewide mutual aid process and his work with Hennepin County’s Life Safety Unit.

He is the second Chaska resident to win an award from the Minnesota State Fire Chief Association this year. Chaska Fire Marshal Kevin Gravalin received the 2011 Public Fire Safety Education Award.
