A group of Belle Plaine business owners pulling for pull tab permits had its request denied Monday night by the Belle Plaine City Council.
The council voted 5-1 to deny the Belle Plaine German Day Committee’s request for charitable gambling premises permits at Red Door Bar, Johan’s Sports Bar and Huck’s Shipwreck Saloon.
The Belle Plaine Herald reports a large audience in attendance at the meeting, many of whom spoke up on the issue. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carrie Traxler pleaded against the request, saying the chamber already conducts charitable gambling at two of the sites and allowing another entity would dilute the proceeds the chamber receives and relies on.
Chamber Charitable Gambling Manager Tom Meger also addressed the council and questioned the German Day Committee’s qualifications as a nonprofit organization, which is one of the criteria needed to be granted a charitable gambling license.
