CHASKA – If the first two games are any indication for the Chaska boys basketball team this season, you better make sure to stick around to the finish. For the second time in as many games the Chaska Hawks won a one point game this time defeating the defending Class AAA champion in Orono 65-64.
The game would see the referees keep the game very tight and would use their whistle early and often throughout the game and would force both teams to deal with foul trouble. It would start off close, but then Orono would go on an 18-0 run to put them up 23-7 midway through the first half thanks to their swarming full court defense. Chaska would also see foul trouble for their backcourt with both Kolby Seiffert and Ryan Spencer with three fouls. It would force more playing time with freshman Justin Arnold, senior Luke Stone and junior Gavin Bjorklund. Orono would go into the half with 34-23 lead thanks to 15 points from Brady Wohler with six points.
The second half would see Orono quickly extend their lead to 15 at 41-26. Chaska would start to break the full court press by Orono and would make some open three pointers with Luke Stone off the bench to slowly chip away at the Spartan lead. Once again Seiffert and Spencer would be sent to the bench early thanks to their fourth personal foul for the Hawks.
Sophomore Eric West would carry the scoring in the second half for Chaska with 15 points including a baseline jumper with two minutes left to tie the game at 60-60. The score would be tied at 62 and 64 before Luke Stone made one of two free throws with 10 seconds left to take the 65-64 lead. Orono would not use a timeout and get the ball to Brady Wohler, but he would be triple-teamed and forced to pass the ball and the Spartans were not able to get a final shot up as time expired. The Chaska student section stormed the floor afterward to celebrate the big victory over last year’s state champ in Class AAA.
It’s the second one-point win of the season for Chaska after they won at St. Louis Park 60-59 on Tuesday in their first game of the season. Chaska was led by Eric West with 22 points and a big help from Luke Stone with 11 points off the bench including the game-winning free throw with 10 seconds left. Orono was led by Brady Wohler with a game high 26 points.
Chaska improves to 2-0 on the season and will host Bloomington Jefferson Saturday night at 6pm.
