A Scott County District Court judge has sided with the Jordan City Council in demanding that mayor Pete Ewals sign an ordinance he had previously refused to approve.
The ordinance, which was meant to clear up some zoning issues downtown and allow Reflections Crematory to continue operating, received a majority vote from the council last month, but Ewals did not sign the paperwork, saying he believed the decision was illegal.
The council took the issue to court, and last week a Scott County District Court judge issued an order saying the mayor’s duty to sign the ordinance is “not subject to [his] perception of [its] validity.”
Although the judge instructed Ewals to sign the ordinance prior to the next council meeting, the mayor is still weighing his options.
