PRIOR LAKE – Ask any coach and one thing you will hear from them every time is that they need to play defense and rebound. After Thursday night’s performance Prior Lake head coach Alex Focke can put a big check mark next to both of those thanks to their swarming defense and help inside from 7’1″ junior Carson Shanks and 6’8″ Jack Harrison to give Prior Lake a 66-40 victory over New Prague.
Prior Lake and New Prague would alternate between a man and a 2-3 defense throughout the evening with Prior Lake able to hold New Prague to just two made three-pointers on the night. “We just could never find a flow tonight,” head coach Aaron Jasperson said.
The first half saw Prior Lake get out to an early lead they would never relinquish thanks to 14 points from sophomore Jon Sobaski including a three pointer from over 30 feet over the top of New Prague’s 2-3 defense. Prior Lake’s Carson Shanks would find himself in early foul trouble and sat for the final 11 minutes of the first half of the game. New Prague would have disjointed offense and never could get a big run to chip away at the Prior Lake lead and would be lead in the first half by Joe Kneip with eight points. Prior Lake would lead 33-22 at the half.
The second half would see Prior Lake get the first five points of the second half and never look back. The Lakers would dominate the offensive boards and get a strong scoring performance from Jack Harrison and Carson Shanks. New Prague would continue to turn the ball over and quickly fell down by 20 with 10 minutes left to go and would end up losing 66-40.
Prior Lake was led in scoring by Jon Sobaski with 19 points, Jack Harrison with 12 points and 11 points off the bench from Evan Kotchevar. New Prague was led by Joe Kneip, Trevor O’Brien, and Sergio Najera with eight points.
Prior Lake improves to 2-3 on the season and will play at the St. Cloud Apollo tournament over the holidays. New Prague falls to 4-2 overall and will travel to the Rochester Rotary Tournament over the holidays.
