The State Patrol says icy roads contributed to an early morning crash Monday that critically injured a Savage Police officer.

Frank Mackall, 39, from Shakopee, was responding to an emergency call shortly after 1 a.m. on Glendale Road when he lost control of his car near 137th Street, skidded to the left and hit a tree.

Savage Police Captain David Muelken says Mackall was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where he remains in intensive care.

The State Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
