The game Tuesday night at Shakopee High Scholl pitted the 6-4 Shakopee Sabers hosting the 3-8 Chaska Hawks.
Coming into Tuesday’s game the Shakopee Sabers trying to continue their solid start to the season. looking to take advantage of an ailing Chaska team who haven’t gotten off to the start that they had hoped.
Chaska Hawks not feeling sorry for themselves, acknowledges that they’ve had some pretty tough losses to some top tier teams in tournament play. Confident though that if the execute their game plan and play hard all 40 minutes, they can play with any team in the conference.
Defense was the key early in the game holding Shakopee’s second leading scorer Rachel Boegeman to only 4 points for the game. The Chaska Hawks jumping out to a big lead to start the first half only to see the Sabers respond with a run of their own . The two teams traded blows back and forth through most of the first half, until the Sabers started dropping some shots from the perimeter to pull away to a near double-digit lead at the half.
To start the second half it looked as though Shakopee was going to extend their lead as a few quick turnovers led to some easy fast break points for the Sabers. The Hawks quickly collect themselves and begin to chip away at the Sabers’ lead, sparked by Chaska’s leading scorer Ellie Thompson who ended the game with 17 points leading both teams in scoring.
By the middle of the second half the Chaska Hawks had completely taken over the game as they were able to pull away to their own double-digit lead. Late in the second half the Shakopee Sabers call on the full court press, to little to late unfortunately as mistakes on the offensive side and too many fouls on the defensive side of the ball put Chaska at the free throw line and they were able to hold on for win Tuesday night in Shakopee.
