After months of struggles Farmington decides to give up on re-opening the license bureau in City Hall.
The center was opened last March but closed after only about a week.
The center was permitted to sell hunting and fishing licenses but did not get the approval for motor vehicle licenses because the Public Safety Department’s Driver and Vehicle Services Division wouldn’t let the city hire a private vendor to sell driver’s and vehicle licenses, despite a state law passed to permit the public-private partnership.
State officials have said the new law didn’t address a state rule that city license centers must be operated by the city.
Administrator David McKnight told the Star Tribune “We will drop the effort to open our license center for now. We don’t feel we have a willing partner in the state, and we have other priorities to work on this year.”
