St. Louis County sheriff’s officials say the man, armed with a knife, emerged from a home in Babbitt Tuesday evening with the 3-year-old girl. Police responded to a report of a disturbance at the home about 5:30 p.m. Authorities say an officer shot the man after calling for backup.

The 27-year-old man and the child were brought to a hospital in Ely. The Duluth News Tribune says the suspect was later airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. There was no immediate word on their conditions.
