Wrestlers take break after Herpes scare 26 Jan 12

The mat room is quiet this week at New Prague High School, where the Trojan Wrestling team is following orders to refrain from contact practices and competition after a herpes scare.

The Minnesota State High School League enforced the week-long hiatus after wrestlers from Prior Lake and Lakeville South had a “break out” that a medical professional suspects may be herpes. The Trojans wrestled against Prior Lake last week.

Herpes Gladiatorum is a skin infection caused by skin-to-skin contact that can result in lesions on the face, neck, and shoulders.

New Prague Athletic Director Brad Skogerboe tells KCHK the Trojans have always maintained strict health protocol, and he believes the problems wouldn’t exist if every team followed similar protocol.

Skogerboe stress that none of the New Prague wrestlers have shown signs of the condition. All athletes will be examined prior to their next practice Jan. 30.
