IRS agents have raided the office of a Shakopee-based firm that appears to be running a multi-million dollar income-tax fraud conspiracy.
The accounting and immigrant services firm, America Group US Inc., is suspected of submitting more than 700 tax returns that included questionable claims and expense reductions and resulted in refunds of more than 2.5 million dollars. Search warrants unsealed earlier this week show that agents seized dozens of boxes of records and computer equipment from the downtown Shakopee office. The Shakopee Valley News reports a sign on the front of the office was removed immediately following a visit from a Valley News reporter.
The owners of America Group US Inc., Mark and Ornelia Hammerschmidt, are no strangers to run-ins with the federal government. In 2004 the Hammerschmidts were investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for allegedly paying Americans to enter sham marriages to non-citizens.
