Founder of Burkhartzmeyer Shoes dies at 91 05 Mar 12

The founder of Burkhartzmeyer Shoes in Faribault has passed away at the age of 91.

Al Burkhartzmeyer died Wednesday, Feb. 29 at his home. He and his brothers opened Burkhartzmeyer Shoes in 1949 as an extension of the shoe repair business started by their parents. The store is currently a third-generation business and a staple in downtown Faribault.

Burkhartzemeyer received a medical discharge from World War II in 1945 after surviving a plane crash that killed 11 people. He married Erma Ritter in 1949, and was an active civic leader in Faribault, serving on boards and organizations including the Chamber of commerce and Downtown Faribault Association.

He leaves behind his wife, son, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
