Shakopee warden lobbies for perimeter fence 08 Mar 12

SHAKOPEE, Minn. (AP) – The warden of Minnesota’s only women’s prison is trying to convince state lawmakers the facility needs a perimeter fence.

Currently only a hedge separates the prison grounds, which house convicted murderers and other female criminals, from an elementary school in Shakopee. Warden Tracy Bletz says there’s a common misperception the prison houses only non-violent offenders. Bletz says no matter what crime, the female convicts have committed, they are sent Shakopee.

Gov. Mark Dayton has included a $5.4 million fence in his public works proposal. Since a neighborhood has grown up around the prison, the wrought iron fence would be similar to some found on college campuses, but it would have security technology.

KARE-TVreports the Shakopee City Council recently endorsed the fence design.
