Five from Jordan killed in crash didn’t wear seatbelts 02 Apr 12

Authorities say five members of a Minnesota family killed in a motor home crash in northeast Kansas weren’t wearing seatbelts.

The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the fatally injured as 25-year-old Tom Kerber and 24-year-old Melissa Kerber, of New Prague, and 14-year-old Joy Kerber, 12-year-old James Kerber, and 10-year-old Jessica of Jordan.

Tom and Melissa Kerber were married, according to the Star Tribune. Joy, James and Jessica were Tom’s younger siblings. None of them were wearing safety restraints.

The injured included the driver, 17-year-old Adam Kerber, and his mother, Pauline Kerber, 46, both of Jordan. They were listed in critical condition as of this morning. The patrol said only Kerber and one other passenger were wearing seat belts.

Four other Kerber children were injured in the accident, along with friends of the Kerber family from Chaska, Cologne and Carver.Pauline Kerber has three other children who were at home at the time of the crash.

A friend of the family tells The Associated Press the Kerbers are motocross enthusiasts who were coming home from a vacation to see a race. Mary Jo Marks says Pauline Kerber home-schooled the children until several years ago. Kerber’s late husband, Glen, operated an auto store on the family property near the Scott County fairgrounds.
