CenterPoint gas customers due refund 04 Apr 12

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – CenterPoint Energy gas customers in Minnesota are due a refund.

The state Public Utilities Commission has ordered the company to refund customers who paid more because the utility billed them for monthly periods that exceeded 32 days. CenterPoint experimented with tiered pricing meant to encourage conservation.

The more gas a customer would use, the more he or she would pay. If the meter reading period stretched beyond 31 days, some customers were bumped up to a higher tier and paid more. The pricing system was suspended last October after customers complained.

The Star Tribune ( reports the number of customers affected could be in the hundreds of thousands. The amount of the average refund wasn’t immediately known.
