Thursday afternoon at New Prague High School the Trojans Hosted the Chaska Hawks for their first softball game of the regular season. Chaska already 1-0 coming off a big win against Totino Grace in their first game by a score of 12-1. Both coaches with high expectations for the year as they each feel their conference is up for grabs.
Starting in the pitching circle for the Trojans was returning pitcher Amber Hoffman who found herself in a pinch early in the first inning. Hoffman giving up a couple early singles to allow some base runners, couple that with some fielding errors by her defense behind her, the Trojans found themselves behind 2-0 after the first inning. “We had some nerves and it kind of got to us…a couple mental errors…I think that first inning just kind of hit us.” said Hoffman.
For the Hawks starting pitcher Taylor Schwalbe had herself quite a performance only giving up 1 run on only a handful of hits. She was able to throw the Trojan hitters off balance by mixing up rising fastballs with low off speed pitches. The Trojan hitters displayed a little rust getting some good contact at times but for the most part timing was off as we saw a lot of balls fouled off and hit out of play.
The Trojans able to push 1 run across in the second inning but still found themselves down by 1.
Chaska seizing opportunities were able to take advantage of a couple more fielding errors by the Trojans. “I think a lot of it was first game jitters…a lot of excitement and some players trying to make the play before the ball actually gets to us” said Trojan head coach Pat Perkinson.
Chaska was able to pushed the lead out to three as they lead the Trojans by a score of 4-1 after 5. The Trojans attempts to come from behind were feeble as Taylor Schwalbe’s performance in the circle was just too much for the Trojans Thursday as the Chaska Hawks hold on to win this one by a final of 4-1.
