Minn’s Smith expects contract deal will get done 06 Apr 12

Minneapolis, Minn. (AP) – Tubby Smith says he remains confident that a new contract extension will be finished at Minnesota in due time. He just doesn’t expect it to happen until after the Golden Gophers hire a new athletic director.

Smith’s current deal runs through the 2013-14 season, and talks about extending it have been going on for more than a year. There was a feeling around the program that a deal was imminent, but Smith said Thursday it might take a while. New Minnesota President Eric Kaler is still working on hiring a replacement for Joel Maturi.

The Gophers are coming off a second straight disappointing season. They finished 23-15 on the season, but just 6-12 in the Big Ten before making a run to the NIT title game.
