ATM swindler arrested for cashing empty deposit envelopes 17 Apr 12

An Eden Prairie man has been arrested for swindling multiple people in the Burnsville and Lakeville area.

Baker Albert, 22, faces one count of theft by swindle, a felony.

According to the complaint, Albert performed the same scam a number of times at places like grocery stores, gas stations, and the Burnsville Center. Each time, he would approach a stranger asking if they would cash a check for him, worth several hundred dollars.

The two would then go to an ATM to deposit the envelope. The victims would withdraw the agreed upon amount, not realizing the deposit envelope was empty.

Albert allegedly cheated 11 different people and made away with about $1,500. He made his first appearance in Dakota County Court on March 28.

Albert faces similar charges in Scott and Carver counties.
