Students mourn deaths of Hibbing High classmates 30 Apr 12

TOIVOLA, Minn. (AP) – It could be a tough day for students at Hibbing High School Monday.

A weekend car crash killed two friends just weeks before graduation. Lindsey Gonzalez and Kelsey Perkins, both 17, died after their car left Highway 5 near Toivola and rolled over, landing in a creek Saturday night.

Classmates gathered late Sunday on the embankment near the creek and shared memories and tears. Roses were scattered on the grassy slope.

Renee Lalonde was close friends with Perkins and Gonzalez. Lalonde tells the Duluth News Tribune (http://bit.ly/IOyz4w) the two were like sisters and it will be hard to imagine life without them.

Superintendent Robert Belluzzo says school staff will be “hypervigilant” this week as they help students deal with the loss.
