Shakopee company to pay $500K in back wages, missed overtime pay 07 May 12

A Shakopee landscaping company has been ordered to pay $500,000 for violating the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act.

Hawkins Tree and Landscaping must pay $478,000 in back wages and damages to 57 current and former employees. Owners Michael and Dawn Hawkins have also agreed to pay a $22,000 civil fine.

The Hawkinses entered the consent judgement in U.S. District Court on April 18. The company conceded to all violations, including failing to award overtime pay and misclassifying employees as contract workers.

According to the Shakopee Valley News, the consent judgment resolves a lawsuit filed by the Labor Department in 2010.
