Winona, Minn. man missing in Mississippi River 18 May 12

WINONA, Minn. (AP) – A Winona man is missing after he fell off a boat into the Mississippi River.

Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand says two men were boating about 4 p.m. Thursday when one fell into the river.

The 57-year-old man was not wearing a life vest. The other man threw one to him but he couldn’t reach it.

The search continued until it grew dark about 8:30 p.m. Searchers planned to go out again at 7 o’clock this morning.

The Winona Daily News reports the Mayo One helicopter scanned miles of river and shoreline for hours, but found nothing.

Law enforcement planned to ask operators to temporarily close Lock and Dam 6 near Trempealeau, Wisconsin.
