Mankato man drowns in popular swimming pond 11 Jun 12

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) – Authorities say a Mankato man who drowned in a popular swimming spot has been identified.

Captain Rich Murry of the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Department says 23-three-year-old Madi Omot Nyigow was swimming with friends Saturday at Hiniker Pond.

He was seen going under shortly after 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Mankato police recovered him just before 7 p.m. Saturday. He was pronounced dead at a Mankato hospital.

Murry told the The Free Press of Mankato on Sunday that an autopsy will be done. It’s not yet known whether alcohol or health issues factored into Nyigow’s death.
