MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A person with knowledge of the agreement tells The Associated Press that the Minnesota Twins have agreed with No. 2 overall draft pick Byron Buxton on a contract that includes a $6 million signing bonus. That’s the richest deal so far in this year’s draft class.
The person requested anonymity because the deal has not been announced. Baseball America first reported the agreement.
Buxton arrived in Minnesota on Tuesday to take a physical and work out the final details on a contract. The outfielder from Appling County High School in Georgia even took batting practice with the team before they played the Phillies and hit a homer on one of his final swings.
Twins GM Terry Ryan calls Buxton a “five-tool player.”
