Woman settles excessive force claim against police 13 Jul 12

STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) – A woman who says she suffered a fracture in a scuffle with a Stillwater police officer has settled her lawsuit claiming excessive force.

Katherine Liend sued Officer Brad Allen in federal court in 2011, alleging he violated her civil rights by using excessive force at a bar in downtown Stillwater in 2010. Liend’s attorney, Robert Bennett, says she has settled her claim for $150,000.

Police responded to a fight at the former Cherry Bowl bar that involved Liend’s friend. As Allen started to arrest her friend, Liend struck the officer.

Bennett tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press his client suffered a fracture and tendon and ligament damage when Allen wrenched her arm behind her back. A complaint says Liend missed more than a month of work and underwent surgery.
