New trial for mother accused of killing infant 16 Jul 13

STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) – A new trial is under way in Washington County for a woman whose conviction in the death of her newborn was overturned.

Nicole Beecroft was 17 when she gave birth at her Oakdale home in April 2007, stabbed the infant and placed the body in a trash can. She was found guilty of murder and sent to prison for life.

But, her conviction and sentence were overturned last year when the Minnesota Supreme Court said Beecroft’s right to due process was violated. Beecroft has maintained the baby was stillborn.

The Star Tribune reports a prosecutor said in opening statements Monday Beecroft had confirmed her pregnancy with a clinic but failed to tell even her mother.

Beecroft’s attorney said experts would testify Beecroft’s baby was stillborn before she inflicted wounds.
