MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) – Prosecutors have charged a Minnesota man with manslaughter after his 5-month-old daughter died after being left for hours in a hot minivan last week.

The Clay County Attorney’s office charged 24-year-old Andrew Sandstrom with one count of second-degree manslaughter.

Sandstrom will be summoned to appear in court at a later date.

Police say Christiana Natany Sandstrom died after she was left in her car seat in the van for about four hours on June 11. Temperatures were reported to be about 80 degrees.

Police say Sandstrom forgot about the infant while unloading five other young children out of the vehicle. He called 911 when he realized what had happened.

A home phone number for Sandstrom could not be found.

PRESTON, Minn. (AP) – A Minnesota mother and her 18-year-old son are accused of stealing nearly $5,000 in frozen gopher feet and selling them for a bounty.

Thirty-seven-year-old Tina Marie Garrison and Junior Lee Dillon, both of Preston, were charged last month with receiving stolen property and theft. They allegedly gave the feet to local townships that offer rewards as they try to limit the gopher population.

Garrison has pleaded not guilty. Her son has a hearing next month.

The complaint says a gopher trapper reported to authorities that bags of feet were stolen from his freezer. According to the complaint, the owner found Dillon had turned in $1,014 in feet in November. In December, Garrison turned in $3,780 in feet.

The Post-Bulletin reports that Dillon denied turning in any feet for the bounty.

NEW ULM, Minn. (AP) – A man who says he was sexually abused by an Irish priest in Minnesota in 1982 is suing the Diocese of New Ulm, taking advantage of a new law easing the state’s statute of limitations for victims of childhood sexual abuse.

Attorney Patrick Noaker filed the lawsuit in Brown County on behalf of John Doe 103. It names Francis Markey, who was extradited to Ireland in 2010 to face sexual abuse charges there. He died last year before going on trial.

John Doe 103 says in the lawsuit that he was about 15 years old when Markey abused him in 1982 while he served at a parish in Henderson.

The diocese says it “deeply regrets the long-lasting and devastating effects of sexual misconduct on the part of clergy.”

COOK, Minn. (AP) – Investigators say a fire that destroyed two businesses and eight apartments in the St. Louis County community of Cook appears to be accidental.

The St. Louis County sheriff’s office and the state fire marshal’s office conducted a joint investigation. While the exact cause of the fire is unknown, authorities say foul play is not suspected.

Authorities say the building that housed the Dollar Barn and Gilley’s Naturals, as well as the apartments, is a total loss and will be torn down. WDIO-TV reports the American Red Cross is assisting those who lived in the apartments.

St. Louis County sheriff officials say five fire departments worked the blaze Monday night. Some firefighters were still on the scene early Tuesday morning.

Four of the eight new astronauts are women, the highest percentage of female astronaut candidates ever selected by NASA.

The eight were chosen from more than 6,000 applications received early last year, the second largest number ever received. They will report for duty in August at Johnson Space Center in Houston and join 49 astronauts currently at NASA.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said these new candidates will help lead the first human mission to an asteroid in the 2020s, and then Mars, sometime in the following decade

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – A man accused of using a violent tattoo to menace a Minneapolis police officer has pleaded guilty to making terroristic threats.

Twenty-one-year-old Antonio Jenkins Junior was sentenced Monday to probation.

As Hennepin County Judge Lyonel Norris accepted the plea, he told Jenkins he needed to learn to control his impulses.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports prosecutors offered Jenkins a deal after he had parts of the tattoo obliterated with black ink.

The homemade tattoo showed a person holding a pistol to the mouth of a pig wearing a Minneapolis police uniform. The pig carried the badge number of an officer Jenkins told police he was angry with.

Jenkins was charged last November after a sheriff’s deputy spotted a photo of the man’s tattoo on Facebook.

RUSHFORD, Minn. (AP) – A southeastern Minnesota man has died after he was accidentally struck by shrapnel during a bachelor-bachelorette party west of Rushford.

Fillmore County Sheriff Daryl Jensen says 47-year-old Jeffrey Taylor of Utica was tending cattle with his two sons on his property when they were invited to the party at a home on the same property.

Jensen says some of the people at the party were shooting at “explosive targets for fun.” Just before 9 p.m. Saturday, someone shot at a target as Taylor and others watched. Taylor was apparently hit in the abdomen by the shrapnel.

Taylor collapsed and was driven to a nearby location where a Rushford ambulance and a Mayo Clinic helicopter were waiting. The Post-Bulletin reports he was pronounced dead at that location.

Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan says no one on the Fort Myers Twins bus was injured in the crash that occurred about 4:25 a.m. Tuesday near Jacksonville. A second bus picked up the team and went on to Elizabethton, Tenn., which also has a Twins instructional league affiliate.

Bryan says the driver of a black Honda was killed. The car was traveling south in the northbound lanes on Interstate 295 when it collided head-on with the bus.

The driver was described as a man in his mid-20s. His identity was being withheld until family is notified.

(AP) – Chisholm’s police chief says the 5-year-old girl who vanished without a trace ten years ago is still very much on the minds of investigators.

Chief Vern Manner says no one has forgotten LeeAnna Warner, a brown-eyed, brown-haired girl many call Beaner. She headed to a friend’s house in her neighborhood to play on June 14, 2003. No one was home and the girl has not been seen since.

Local and state law enforcement officers are expected to join Beaner’s parents, Chris and Kaelin Warner, on the steps of Chisholm City Hall Friday to say publicly that they have not given up hope on finding Beaner.

The Duluth News Tribune says authorities have followed about 2,000 leads over the years in their search for the girl.

(AP) – A former Minnesota State Patrol trooper accused of driving drunk on his way to a training session in Duluth has pleaded guilty to careless driving.

The drunken driving charge has been dismissed by the city attorney. St. Louis County Judge Richard Jessen stayed a 90-day jail term for Nick Morse and placed him on 14 months of probation.

Defense attorney Frederic Bruno says the plea agreement was a reasonable compromise. Bruno says it’s likely Morse will return to law enforcement. State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske says Morse is no longer a trooper.

City Attorney Gunnar Johnson says the 30-year-old Two Harbors man had no prior history and a low test level for drunken driving.

The Duluth News Tribune says Morse must undergo a chemical dependency evaluation.
