Lolong, the world’s largest captive saltwater crocodile, was found dead in his pond at a Philippine ecotourism park. The town of Bunawan is mourning the loss of one of its most interesting residents and plans to preserve the remains of the 1-ton crocodile, so tourists and villagers can continue to marvel at the giant creature.

The 50-year-old crocodile was discovered dead on Sunday when he was found floating upside down with a bloated stomach. Wildlife experts will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Lolong was initially captured in 2011 after being found responsible for several human deaths, including a child and a missing fisherman. Yet, despite the reputation as a man-eater, the town is saddened by the loss of the giant beast and the notoriety and tourism money it brought to the obscure community. The villagers also felt Lolong, who was named for an environmental officer that died while traveling to Bunawan to help trap the reptile, represented the rich natural biodiversity of the region, which is made up of a variety of wetlands and is home to unique animal species, such as the threatened Philippine hawk eagle.

“The whole town, in fact the whole province, is mourning,” Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said. “My phones kept ringing because people wanted to say how affected they are.”

Local spiritual leaders plan to hold a tribal funeral rite on Monday at the ecotourism park, which will include prayers and the butchering of animals to thank the forest spirits for the blessings the crocodile brought the town.
The 2,000 lb Lolong measured 20 feet 3 inches, and was recognized last year by Guinness World Records as the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity, taking the title from an Australian crocodile that weighs almost a ton and is around 17-feet long.

New Prague – To say things went according to plan at Memorial Park Monday night wouldn’t be just a misrepresentation, it’d be a flat out lie.

On a night when New Prague and Chanhassen baseball stressed defense, three key errors were committed.

On a night when coaches stressed strong pitching, hurlers gave up 27 hits and 11 walks.

And finally, on a night that New Prague felt like they could turn around their “key hitting” woes, they went 9-for-19 with runners in scoring position and left the bases loaded twice.

That being said, the Trojans somehow manufactured four runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal a victory away from the Storm 10-9.

Chanhassen would get on the board first with a run in the top of the first off the bat of Trevor Patterson after Brandon Arnold led the game off with a double. Arnold looked like he would take control of the game with a two run double in the second, however his bat would cool off afterwards.

In the bottom of the first, probably one of the most bizarre sequence of events in recent history at Memorial Park took place. The New Prague offense walked off the field believing the inning was over only to be ushered back on after a blown infield fly call.

With one out and the bases loaded Jake Molitor hit a fly ball to the left side of the infield, infield fly was called for the second out. However, instead of catching the ball Ryan McGuire and Ty Denzer of Chanhassen let the ball hit the ground. Standing at third, Eric Wagner took off to home and Derrick Isaacson, on second, tried advancing to third. McGuire would pick the ball off the ground and in one motion stepped on third and threw home. Wagner was able to get under the tag safely but after apparent confusion on the field umpires ruled a third out and the end of the inning. The problem, no one on New Prague’s side knew where the third out came from, Chanhassen wasn’t about to argue and ran off the field.

Trojan Manager Tom Wetchska conferred with both umpires over what should be the correct ruling on the field.

In the event of an infield fly the only force play is the batter which is called out immediately, no runners are forced to advance. In fact, what Chanhassen did is the reason the rule is in place. To avoid a simple double play for the defense.

The New Prague defense took the field and starting pitcher Garret Palmstein even began a few warm up tosses before the home plate umpire announced a reset. We headed back to the bottom of the first.

Nathan Olson and Joe Heinz would get back to back RBI singles scoring Derek Isaacson and Brok Schwartzkopf respectively. Nathan Olson would score on a throwing error as Andy Kes steals second, replacing Heinz on the base paths. Mike Gillen lines out to end the inning, 4-1 in favor of New Prague.

New Prague however wouldn’t hold onto the lead for too long. Chanhassen scored four runs on two outs. Arnold’s 2-rbi double, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly. In fact, the Storm made a living on scoring late runs, six of nine coming with two outs.

The Trojans gave up a run in the fourth and fifth before scoring two in the top of the sixth before Derrick Isaacson took the mound. Derrick would throw one and two-thirds scoreless innings giving up only two hits.

Trailing by three in the bottom of the seventh, New Prague would need a big rally and that’s exactly what they got.

Nathan Olson drew a five pitch walk to lead things off, Cullen Smith followed with a single. After Joe Lehman flew out for the first out of the inning Andy Simon walked to load the bases. With two strikes Eric Wagner found some room in the left side of the infield and connected on an RBI single scoring Olson making it a 9-7 game.

Zach Elder replaced Calvin Lee on the mound for the Storm and would only get to face three batters.

Joe Morris only needed to see two pitches before beating out an infield single to second scoring Smith, 9-8. Derrick Isaacson would cap off his impressive performance on the mound with a full count walk bringing in Morris.

When Brok Schwartzkopf took to the plate with the game winning run 90 feet away he said he was just looking for a pitch to hit, it was the first one he saw. With the infield pulled in on the grass and the outfield in, Schwartzkopf sent the first pitch back where it came from, right up the middle.

Wagner crossed home plate to a mob of Trojan players to steal a 10-9 win away from Chanhassen.

“You know, they were down for a little bit but they kept coming back,” Coach Tom Wetschka says about his Trojan team, “They’re kind of gelling right now and that’s a positive thing for us. Huge win for us.”

Thursday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Montgomery the TCU Titans hosted the Sibley East Wolverines for a double header. With both teams hovering or just below .500 approaching the end of the season, both teams need to come away at least one victory in this match up. Two great games both going to extra innings, both with exciting finishes.

In this first game the first couple of innings were relatively easy going both pitchers doing well with good defense behind them until the top of the third inning when Sibley East was able to put together a string of five hits in a row including a double by Ed Reichenbach and a couple of back to back RBI singles from Brandon Ashton and Lucas Shwope giving the Wolverines a 3-0 lead. TCU responded in their half of the inning by pushing across a run on a RBI double by Dalton Zueg.

After the third Sibley East was only able to get one runner in scoring position for the rest of the game. TCU on the other hand was able get some base runners and advance some runners and chip away at the lead with a run coming across in the sixth on a RBI single from Rob D’Amato and the tying run in the seventh off a RBI double from Nate Rosier pushing the game to extra innings.

Neither team able to do anything in the eighth, then leading off the ninth inning was starting pitcher Lucas Shwope who gets a pitch he liked and gave it a ride out to left field over the fence for the first home run of the game and giving Sibley East the lead. TCU unable to respond in their half of the inning giving Sibley East the 4-3 victory in the first game.

In the second game TCU came out hitting right away and was able to put two quick runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. Sibley East not to be out done responded in their next at bats tying the game by pushing across two runs in the top of the second and followed that up with three more runs in the third and two more in the fourth with the biggest contributor being Cody Doetkott with two RBI doubles and stretching the Wolverines lead out to 7-2. TCU once again began to chip away at the lead with a RBI sac fly by Justin Bastyr and a RBI single by Nate Rosier.

Sibley East saw their bats go cold as they were an able to respond and could only watch as they saw TCU come back to tie the game once again in the seventh with a couple of RBI single from Ryan Iverson and Brad Flicek to push the game to extras yet again. The Wolverines go down in order in the top of the eighth and it was TCU’s turn to try to steal a game here and force a two game split. Rob D’Amato leads off and reaches first on an error the Andy Feddema stretches a hit into a double putting runners on second and third, the Wolverines intentionally walk Justin Bastyr to load the bases. Dalton Zueg hits a ground ball and Sibley East forces out D’Amato on the fielders choice not allowing the run but keeping the bases loaded for Nate Rosier who then sees a pitch left over the plate and is able to pop it right over the shortstops head and brings home Andy Feddema for the game winning walk-off run.

Exciting and compelling baseball action in both games of this double header split with Sibley East winning the first game by a final 4-3 and TCU winning the second by a final of 8-7

One week after a 14-hour convention in which GOP delegates were unable to agree on whom to endorse in the First Congressional District, both candidates involved said they plan to file for an August primary. …

One week after a 14-hour convention in which GOP delegates were unable to agree on whom to endorse in the First Congressional District, both candidates involved said they plan to file for an August primary.

Former state representative Allen Quist, of St. Peter, issued a news release Monday indicating his intentions to file, despite having originally supported a follow-up convention agreed upon by delegates.

Senator Mike Parry, of Waseca, will file for the August 14 primary as well, although representatives from Parry’s campaign say they’re disappointed that Quist “broke his word.”

At the April 21 Republican First Congressional District Convention in Mankato, balloting continued into the early morning hours April 22 without either candidate receiving enough delegate support. The convention was kicked out of the Kato Ballroom at 2 a.m. but delegates voted to reconvene at a later date.

A May 12 meeting was scheduled but has now been cancelled due to conflicts. Rice County GOP Chair Bron Scherer told the Faribault Daily News a primary might be necessary, since the delegates likely would not change their minds and the outcome at a different primary would be the same.

season. The first meeting between these two teams ended with 30 combined runs on the scoreboard, but the Sabers coach Neil Johnson was optimistic because Tuesday’s starting pitcher and ace of his staff Alex Walker didn’t start that game and he was confident she could have a good chance to shut the Trojan offense down. The Trojans counter Alex Walker with the leader of their staff Amber Hoffman.

Hoffman started out looking great as always striking out the first batter, but then proceeded to give up four stait hits including three doubles and and a two run homer to Sabers first baseman Alex Lebens who ended up getting five hits on the day reaching in every at bat and racking up six RBI’s. Hoffman finally was able to get out of the inning after giving up three runs in the first as well as another three runs in the second.

On the other side Sabers starter Alex Walker brought her “A” game as she was able to blow through the Trojan line up not allowing a run to score until the fourth inning. Walker was able to frustrate the New Prague batters and keep them guessing striking them out one after another racking up 13 strikeouts in the game including a stretch of five in a row and ends the game striking out the last three batters. Walker goes six innings giving up only 3 runs on 8 hits and walked only one.

After giving up another two runs in the fourth inning Amber Hoffman was taken out of he game and coach Pat Perkinson grabbed pitcher Nichole Reed from the B-squad to come in in relief. Reed faired well in her first inning of relief striking out two of the first three batters that she faced but it didn’t take long for the Sabers to get to her in their next at bats as they got her as well putting up eight more runs on Reed over the next two innings.

The mercy rule came into affect after the sixth inning because the Trojans fell short of getting with in ten runs of the Sabers and the game was called with the Sabers on top big by a final score of 16-3.

The one bright spot of the game was our Pizza Ranch Player of the Game Kelsy McFarland going three for three with three singles, the only consistent offense for the Trojans. “Kelsy can hit a little…she’s learning patience this year, a lot of teams are pitching around her this year…but yeah Kelsy was definitely a bright spot today.” Said Perkinson after the game.

In the first ever Tri-City United “Youth Baseball Night” at the ballpark, the youngsters might have been better suited closing their eyes when watching Titan baseball. (3-7)TCU falls to (5-5) Belle Plaine 16-5 at Memorial Park Monday night.

In only his second start this season, David Trcka lasted 4.2 innings giving up eight runs on five hits. A strong outing that was rendered rather unsatisfying due to lackluster fielding behind him. Only six runs that Trcka surrendered were earned, which in itself isn’t that spectacular. But when you account for the fact that five of those runs came with two outs on the board it’s harder to stomach. Getting that third out seemed to elude the Titans all night long.

“We were right where we wanted to be then the wheels kind of came off,” Titans Manager Bruce Davis said, “Few plays that we probably should have made…didn’t. Then you can see what happens in the Minnesota River Conference, you give people too many chances and things happen.”

The Tigers put up two runs in the top of the first. Trcka struck out Nick Eliason to lead things off, but a Dalton Zeug error at second put Zach Juaire on first. The next two batters would reach to load the bases before Aaron Bigouette connected with two outs on a two run double to left field.

The Titans would get one run back in the bottom of the first then take the lead 3-2 in the second as Trcka, Greg Rynda and Jared Schloesser would reach as the first three batters of the inning.

However three runs in the third and fifth from Belle Plaine put the Tigers up for good. Not to mention a six spot in the sixth with the squad batting through the order. Tigers Manager Pat Schultz called it a team effort.

“We had a lot of guys step up really well. Zach Juaire (had 3) hits really drove the ball well…you know we had some guys step up early that really swung that bat nice for us. It was fun to see.”

The Titans committed five errors, bringing their season total to 29 through 11 regular season games. And for a team that, cumulatively, has outscored their opponents…it’s evident why they are the seventh ranked team in a Minnesota River Conference of eight teams.

With the loss Tri-City United drops to 3-6 on the season and will travel to Jordan on Thursday.

Belle Plaine improves to 5-5 with the win and can move into a tie for second in the conference with a win on Thursday against Norwood Young America.
